VIKINGS vs PIRATES
BATTLE OF THE LAKE

Legend has it that there is a lost lake on the North American soil. This lake is said to have endless treasures that is cursed buried beneath its depths. Edward Thatch better known as Blackbeard, and Eric the Red have navigated through time to search for this Lost Lake and the treasure that lies with it.

Edward Teach or Edward Thatch, better known as BLACKBEARD, was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies.

Teach was most likely born in Bristol, England. Little is known about his early life, but in 1716 he joined the crew of Benjamin Hornigold, a pirate who operated from the Caribbean island of New Providence. He quickly gained his own ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, and from 1717-1718 became a notorious and feared pirate. His cognomen was derived from his think black beard and fearsome appearance; he was reported to have tied lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies.

After separating from Hornigold, Teach formed an alliance of pirates, and with his cohorts blockaded the port of Charleston, South Carolina. After successfully ransoming the port’s inhabitants, he reportedly ran his ship aground, left with a small crew, and accepted a royal pardon. He was soon back at sea however, where he attracted the attention of the Governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood.

Spotswood arranged for a party of soldiers and sailors to find and capture the pirate, which they did on November 22, 1718. After a ferocious battle, Teach was commissioned by Spotswood for one last journey. He was to find the LOST LAKE.

From high ground in western Iceland the peaks of Greenland are sometimes visible, across 175 miles of water. In about AD 981 the distant sight attracts a Viking adventurer, Eric Thorvadsson, also known as Eric the Red. He has a reason for leaving Iceland. He has been exiled for three years as a punishment for manslaughter.

Eric puts his family in a longship, together with their retainers and their livestock, and they sail towards the distinct peaks. They land in the southern tip of the island, near what is now Julianehaab, where they survive the necessary three years.

At the end of his exile Eric returns to Iceland to persuade more settlers to join him. With a better sense of public relations than of accuracy, he gives his territory the attractive name of Greenland. He sets off again with twenty-five longships, of which fourteen complete the journey. About 350 people land with their animals. The colony survives some time in this inhospitable climate; eventually Eric the Red hears about this far off land that offers endless treasures in a hidden lake just off the shores of Greenland.
